Re-Cite (2016)

Composed at the request of saxophonist Nicholas Phillips, it was premiered in March of 2016 with Nick performing on baritone saxophone. The piece is inspired by the artwork of Ellsworth Kelly who passed away in late 2015. More specifically, his 1951 piece titled Cite was particularly influential with this work. Cite was partially created using chance practices; it is a random arrangement of twenty squares with black and white brushstrokes. Below is an image of the piece:
